Ailsa Wharf is a mixed-use development on the River Lea in Poplar, East London. Located on a previously industrial and contaminated site, the approved scheme will deliver 952 homes, as well as commercial floorspace and site-wide landscape and public realm works.

The landscape masterplan supports a whole new residential community, and includes a brand new riverside park, which provides amenity spaces for all ages and play for children. A riverside walk allows pedestrians to gain access along previously inaccessible river frontage and to enjoy views from various seating areas spread along the route.

The site enjoys increased permeability, allowing pedestrians to access Ailsa Wharf directly along the green link to the riverside park. Children’s play spaces and gathering spaces for people to meet are located along the way. Further play areas are distributed appropriately throughout the masterplan, allowing children direct access to play.

The neighbourhood’s streets include as many trees and planting areas as possible, to not only green the site and bring people closer to nature, but also to provide separation between pedestrians and vehicle movement. Opportunities to add planting have been taken across the site to increase biodiversity and provide new habitats for wildlife, including podium and rooftop gardens as well as biodiverse roofs.
