Reflections

From landscape design to masterplanning and urban design, Josie reflects on a year of learning, new experiences and being part of the fabrik team.

Recently we said goodbye, for now, to Josie as she completed her Year in Practice placement with us and returned to the University of Sheffield for the final year of her integrated Master’s in Landscape Architecture.

Over the course of the year, Josie became a valued part of the fabrik team, spending the first half of her placement within landscape design before moving across to our masterplanning and urban design team. This gave her the opportunity to experience a broad mix of projects, scales and stages, from large residential schemes and schools to hotels, art institutions, playgrounds and mixed-use landscapes.

Working across the two teams also gave Josie the chance to develop her skills throughout the design process, from early site analysis through to detailed plans and visualisations, alongside attending site visits and design team meetings. Most importantly, it allowed her to experience first-hand the collaborative way we work across disciplines at fabrik.

Reflecting on her year, Josie said:

“I had an amazing year and I’m incredibly grateful for the experience. It was great to work on such a diverse range of projects, across different scales and contexts.”

But for Josie, the year was about more than project experience:

“The people at fabrik are what made my year particularly special. Everyone was so supportive, encouraging and welcoming, and always willing to help. I have learnt so much this year thanks to them, and I am excited to put my new skills to use on my masters course this year.”

Placements like Josie’s are a really important part of life at fabrik. They give students the opportunity to gain meaningful experience within practice, but they also bring fresh thinking, enthusiasm and new perspectives into our teams. It has been a pleasure having Josie with us over the past year, and we wish her every success as she completes her Master’s. We hope this isn’t goodbye, just see you later.
