Designing with nature, not around it

Nature is at the heart of everything we do. At fabrik, we believe the most successful places are those that work in partnership with the natural environment rather than against it. Landscape is not an afterthought or mitigation.  It is the foundation for resilient, healthy and enduring places. From strategic masterplans to public realm, residential communities and landscape planning, our approach begins by understanding the unique characteristics of every place. We consider ecology, hydrology, topography, climate, heritage and existing habitats before exploring how new development can enhance, rather than diminish, the natural systems that already exist. This philosophy is embedded throughout our work and reflects our commitment to creating places that support both people and nature.

Looking beyond compliance

Environmental legislation and planning policy establish an important baseline, but we believe every project should aspire to achieve more. We advocate a “policy-plus” approach, seeking opportunities to improve biodiversity, strengthen ecological networks and create landscapes that are better equipped to respond to a changing climate. This means thinking beyond individual requirements to consider the long-term environmental performance of a place. Whether integrating sustainable drainage, restoring habitats, designing multi-functional green infrastructure or improving access to nature, our ambition is always the same – to leave every place better than we found it.

Designing for climate resilience

Climate resilience is now fundamental to placemaking. As our towns and cities adapt to rising temperatures, increased flood risk and changing weather patterns, landscape architecture has an increasingly important role to play. Nature-based solutions offer some of the most effective ways of creating resilient places, while delivering multiple environmental and social benefits. We work closely with clients as part of multi-disciplinary teams to integrate nature-led solutions from the earliest stages of design. Water management becomes public space. Biodiversity becomes infrastructure. Tree planting improves health, comfort and resilience. Open spaces become networks that connect communities whilst supporting wildlife. By placing nature at the centre of decision-making, we create places that continue to evolve and perform for generations.

Nature for everyone

Access to nature should never be considered a luxury. We believe that everyone should benefit from high-quality green spaces that improve physical health, mental wellbeing and everyday quality of life. Landscape has the power to encourage play, support biodiversity, improve air quality, reduce stress and strengthen communities. These benefits extend far beyond environmental metrics, they shape healthier, happier and more resilient places. Our work seeks to reconnect people with nature through landscapes that are welcoming, inclusive and accessible to all.

Nature in practice

Our projects demonstrate how landscape-led thinking creates better outcomes. Whether delivering strategic green infrastructure, country parks, sustainable urban extensions, civic spaces or biodiversity enhancements, we see landscape as an essential framework for successful placemaking, rather than simply one component within it. Nature informs every decision we make, from the earliest vision through to long-term stewardship, helping create places that are environmentally responsible, socially valuable and economically resilient.
